Sumner received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 2004 and holds a real estate brokerage license in the state of California since 2007. He is a active member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), a 2010 designee with Certified Commercial Investment Membership (CCIM) and in August 2014 obtained his MBA from the University of Southern California.
